Purpose:

Pelvis: To visualize the uterus and ovaries.

How long will the pelvic ultrasound take?

Approximately 30-45 minutes.

Preparation for a pelvic ultrasound :

Inform the technologist if you have a latex allergy.

The technologist will ask you to have a very full bladder immediately prior to the exam by drinking 32 oz of water 1 hour prior to the pelvic ultrasound.

Procedure:

You will be asked to lie on a table where a technologist will apply a gel to your pelvis

area and move a transducer to various points across your abdomen in order to

best demonstrate anatomy. If nessesary by your doctor you will empty your bladder

and a Trans-vaginal ultrasound will be performed

Trans-vaginal Ultrasound– A sheath-covered probe will be inserted into your vagina. It is necessary to move the probe forward and swivel it from side to side to visualize all structures. Most women do not find the procedure painful.

After the examination:

The radiologist will study your images and dictate a report that will be sent to your physician within 3-4 business days.
