Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm (AAA)

Purpose

To check for bulging (aneurysm) in the abdominal aorta to detect, diagnose or monitor it and prevent life threatening rupture.

How long will this abdominal ultrasound take?

This exam takes up to 30 minutes.

Preparation for an Abdominal Ultrasound

  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam

Procedure:

You will be asked to lie on a table where a technologist will apply a gel to your mid abdomen and move a transducer to various points across your abdomen in order to best demonstrate anatomy. You may be asked to hold your breath for a short time to capture an image.

After Procedure:

The radiologist will study your images and dictate a report, which will be sent to your physician within 3–5 business days.
