Carotid Ultrasound

Purpose

  • Evaluate blockages or narrowing in arteries of the neck that supply blood to the brain
  • Detect build up of plaque (atherosclerosis) that increases risk of strokes
  • Evaluate for blood flow and identify risk of strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or syncope (dizziness)

How long will this ultrasound take?

This exam takes up to 30-40 mins

Preparation for a carotid ultrasound

  • Remove neck jewelry

Procedure:

You will be asked to lie on a table where a technologist will apply a gel to neck area and the probe is used to assess the arteries. Both right and left carotid arteries are evaluated.

After Procedure:

The radiologist will study your images and dictate a report, which will be sent to your physician within 3–5 business days.
