Kidney Ultrasound

Purpose

  • To check for kidney stones, cysts, tumors, infections, hydronephrosis
  • Evaluate kidney size and structure and bladder
  • Assess blood flow and monitor chronic kidney conditions

How long will this ultrasound take?

This exam takes up to 15-20 mins

Preparation for a renal ultrasound

  • Drink at least 24-36 oz of water before the exam and avoid urinating so the bladder is full.

Procedure:

You will be asked to lie on a table where a technologist will apply a gel to the abdomen area and scan right and left side to check for both kidneys. Pelvic area is also checked for bladder. Patient is then asked to empty their bladder to take images of post void bladder size.

After Procedure:

The radiologist will study your images and dictate a report, which will be sent to your physician within 3–5 business days.
