To visualize the uterus and ovaries from a closer internal perspective for greater detail.

How long will the transvaginal ultrasound take?

Approximately 15–30 minutes.

Preparation for a Transvaginal Ultrasound

• Inform the technologist if you have a latex allergy.
• Typically performed after a pelvic ultrasound, you may be asked to empty your bladder before the procedure.

Procedure

A sheath-covered probe will be inserted into your vagina. It is necessary to move the probe forward and swivel it from side to side to visualize all structures. Most women do not find the procedure painful.

After the Examination

The radiologist will study your images and dictate a report that will be sent to your physician within 3–4 business days.
